Battle Mages - Battle Mages are mages that have been extensively trained in the art of offensive magick. They are warrior mages who have one goal and that goal is to win battles. The Church of the One True God (the primary religion of Azin) was against this and they are still against their use to this day. The creation of the Battle Mages occurred in TK 300 and this decision is still being questioned over 700 years later.

In TK 300 King Arimis Duncan Nari' was facing the complete annihilation of the Human race at the hands of the Horde and their Dark Force Allies made a decision to save his people at what cost or how high the cost has yet to be determined. With a stroke of a quill, he made the creation of the Battle Mages Law.

The following is comprised of passages from King Arimis Duncan Nari' and the royal scribes journals of the events that took place in TK 300.

Third day of the month of Dawn in the Year 300 TK:

"Like translucent bed sheets, the rain comes once more, to work away the mortar of the keep and the surrounding dirt of the land. The advisors said that the rain was finished for a time after yesterday's storm. Once again, their guesswork was wrong. At times, I do not know why I write this journal. I doubt that it will be of any use to those who will come after me.

Whoever said, "it was good to be King" should have been made the Court Jester. My advisors have petitioned to create a defense against rumors of what the Horde and the traitors might be plotting. This means more gold diverted from my people’s needs to another one of my advisors' grand plans. In all fairness, the advisors in the past have had some brilliant plans. The one great plan that sticks in my mind was what David called the shower plan. The first part of the plan called for the building of several windmills to draw water from the ground was brilliant. The second part of that plan called for the building of water carriers. Nothing more than large wine vats with wheels affixed to it and a seat for the driver to control the team of horses. This plan saved my people from hunger and thirst during the years of drought.

I will listen to them. The peace is unbalanced. In the last two months of the war casualty posts have had 4000 names upon them each. In these past few months of peace, the casualties caused by border disputes have claimed nearly half that number. The difference is this time the dead are not soldiers they are families with children. Yes, I suppose I will listen to their plan. What they call the Battle Magus.

I can hear their soggy footsteps approaching my chambers. The time to decide between bread and lance is here."

Later, in the Great Hall of the High King, Arimis Duncan Nari'…

"Forgive me, my Lord and esteemed fellow advisors. However, my colleague here is wrong. He insists all that is needed is a bluff. Spending a few pieces of gold on an illusion that we are building a defense against their unholy alliance will be worthless. They will be able to see through the illusion." Advisor Erich Varga of the western province of Kallon glared at Advisor Philip Darren of Kimmen. Erich continued. "My lord, surely you can see the wisdom of creating this arm of the army. This would greatly increase your ability to defend your people."

The King looked at the power that was gathered in the Great Hall - all of his advisors, all of the regional governors, The Cardinal of Azin and his friend, the Court Mage, here in one place. The King, tired of the cost of war and the cost of peace, began to wonder if it was all worth it.

"My lord? Are you feeling all right?" Cardinal Thomas of Tyree asked.

The King, a little embarrassed, smiled at the Cardinal. In a soft voice, the King spoke. "I am alright." Clearing his throat, the King began again louder so that all in the Great Hall could hear him. "Gentlemen, the hour is late. This debate has gone on since noon and it is almost dawn of the next day. You have all argued, and I do mean argued, your points very well. However, this is not getting us anywhere.

We know that the traitors have sold their loyalties to a Lych and are in league with the Horde. The rumors of this unholy alliance have everyone scared. Something must be done." Taking a deep breath the King turned to the Cardinal. "Your holiness, can the church do anything." The Cardinal, uncomfortable about being put on the spot, took a moment to compose his words carefully. "It is the position of the Church that the Church will be able to withstand any and all aggression from evil."

The King could feel the frustration in his advisor's minds at the comment the Cardinal had just boldly uttered. The King in a serious tone inquired. "My good Cardinal, if the Church can withstand any and all aggressions from evil then why is the Holy Fortress on the Crystal River burning as we talk? From what my engineers tell me, that fortress will be burning for days."

The Cardinal, attempting to remain composed, began. "Your Majesty, as you know it takes seven additional years to train a Warrior Priest once they have completed their initial training. Thus, it could take a total of 10 years to train them. The first ranks will not be ready for two years. The Church did not begin their training when the war began because the Kings of the Great Houses assured the Church that they could deal with the Horde.

The King looked at everyone in the room. "Give me the order to create these Battle Mages! I will sign it into Law. That is, unless the good Cardinal can swear that the Church can and will protect my people from the Horde?" The King commanded. The Cardinal just lowered his head.

The King put his seal to the writ turning it from an idea born out of desperation it into the Law of the Kingdom of Azin.

Brass - Brass (MR 4, Element Fire) has been known since ancient times. Brass is a copper zinc alloy. Zinc was unknown to the ancient world. Brass was produced by melting Copper and Calamine together. Calamine is a zinc ore usually containing two different zinc minerals. It was not until the 18th century that scientists discovered that Calamine contained two separate minerals. Calamine received its name from where it was mined.

Brass is a yellow color that is muted but is similar to the color of gold. However, it is distinguishable enough that one can tell the difference with the eye. Due to its color, Brass has been used for ornamentation, decoration, and even coating for coins. It is commonly used in this fashion even today.

Brass has been confused with many bronze alloys throughout history. It has a lower melting point than either copper or zinc. Brass is not ferromagnetic. It will not produce a spark. The usefulness of Brass in many ancient to modern day devices for its properties is endless.

In the Living World of Alquennas, Alchemists and Users of Magick use Brass. It is used for everything from coated hinges for cabinet doors that hold explosive compounds to tools and components made completely of Brass. Brass is 150 P per pound.
